Black Girls Love Math eliminates racial and gender inequality in mathematics. Through culturally responsive teaching practices, we cultivate a positive math identity for our girls. BGLM provides enrichment, mentoring and a community for Black girls to embrace math as a tool for empowerment.
Black Girls Love Math will exponentially increase the number of Black girls in Advanced Placement math classes and math focused college majors.
STEM workforce consists of women, and of these women, less than 10% are BIPOC. Black, Latina, and Indigenous women are especially underrepresented in STEM fields, particularly in the engineering, life sciences, and computer science workforce.

“Black Girls Love Math (BGLM) is committed to cultivating a safe space for girls to develop a positive math identity. We are disrupting the system that limits opportunity to Black girls who love math.”
- Atiyah Harmon, BGLM Founder

A letter from our Board Chair
Dear BGLM Friends and Supporters,
Welcome to the new Black Girls Love Math website! As Board Chair and Interim Executive Director, I'm honored to introduce you to our organization and share our vision for the future, building on the incredible foundation laid by our founder, Atiyah Harmon.
Founded in 2020 by Atiyah Harmon, Black Girls Love Math (BGLM) was created with a powerful purpose: to elevate the role of Black girls in STEM careers and address racial and gender inequity in mathematics. Our dedication to empowering young Black girls in mathematics remains at the core of everything we do.
Over the past four years, we've reached over 250 girls through our programs, workshops, and mentorships. We've cultivated positive math identities and created spaces where Black girls can explore, engage with, and excel in mathematics.
Our approach, inspired by the founding principles, and is built on a few key elements:
-
Representation matters. We know the importance of having Black women teachers to decrease inequality in education.
-
Culturally responsive practices are essential. We create fun, encouraging, and culturally conscious spaces for Black girls to discover their love for math.
-
Math is a tool for empowerment. We encourage our girls to use their math skills for community engagement and social justice.
Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to grow our impact:
-
Expanding our programming and developing comprehensive Algebra readiness curriculum across multiple geographic regions
-
Increasing opportunities for our participants to engage in math competitions
-
Developing a ecosystem of instructors, interns, universities, and STEM professionals who align with our mission
-
Partnering with leaders nationwide to enhance our career development programming
-
Developing the Center for Black Women in Advanced Teaching in Math to support and increase the number of Black women math teachers.
We invite you to explore our new website and learn more about our programs, our team, and how you can get involved.
Whether you're a potential student, parent, educator, or supporter, there's a place for you in the BGLM community.
Thank you for your interest in Black Girls Love Math. Together, we can continue to build on our founding vision, exponentially increasing the number of Black girls and women thriving in STEM careers and creating change in our world.
With gratitude,
Dr. Antonio Vance Board Chair
